What is Coolsculpting?
Coolsculpting
is a device made by a company known as Zeltiq. It uses a non surgical
technique known as Cryolipolysis to effectively and permanently remove
fats by freezing.How and Why does it work?
Cryolipolysis by Zeltiq is a
non-invasive permanent fat removal treatment that is FDA approved to
gently, effectively and permanently remove fat by a technique known as
Cryolipolysis.
Cryolipolysis works by “freezing” the
fat cells of the targeted area that you intend to have the fat removed
(at the same time, nerves and other body tissues and cells are kept
intact) with an applicator for 1-2 hours. Research by Dr. Dieter
Manstein & Dr. R. Rox Anderson of Massachusetts General Hospital
(Harvard) has shown that fat cells are more susceptible to cold than
other tissues. When subjected to précised controlled low temperatures,
for an extended period of time, apoptosis (controlled cell death) of the
fat cells will result. This means that the fat cells which have been
deliberately damaged will prompt the body to react naturally and dispose
of these damaged fat cells through the body’s lymphatic system.
We
only use the Original Zeltiq Coolsculpting device and applicators which
is evidence based to be safe and effective. We do not use any third
party, generic or imitation cryolipolysis products.
Which areas of the body can Coolsculpting treat? Can both genders use the treatment?
We
have successfully applied treatment to both men and women for the upper
and lower abdomen, the lovehandles, lower back, arms as well as the
inner and outer thighs. The treatments have yielded very good feedback
from patients of both genders, especially for new mummies who are unable
to lose that post-pregnancy pouch and thighs.What kind of reduction and how much weight can I expect to lose?
Similar to other fat removal procedures available (e.g. VASER Liposelection),
CoolSculpting is NOT a mean to lose weight. It also is not a treatment
for cellulite and stretch marks. Patient can expect up to 20% fat
reduction in the treated area. But this varies from individuals,
dependent on the individual’s genetic fat makeup.
How does the procedure feel like, since it is not performed under local anesthesia?
The treatment will feel like a “tug and
pull”, as the CoolSculpting machine will need to “pull” the selected
treatment area to the cooling panels of the applicator so as to “freeze”
the fat efficiently. Typically, feedback had been that the procedure is
comfortable. It is comfortable enough for patients to read and even
work on their laptop, although most would prefer to relax through the
procedure, plugging on to enjoy their favorite music or watch a video.
Am I able to return to work immediately? What can one expect after the procedure?
When can results be expected?
Results will be evident within 1 – 5
months, although some patients have noticed results after 3 weeks,
results peaks in the 2nd or 3rd month.
Am I a suitable candidate? Is there any age limit?
Patients in good health, physically and
mentally, with stubborn fat areas that are resistant to diet and
exercise are good potential candidates for the procedure. However, like
any medical treatments, our doctor will need to assess you prior to the
treatment to ensure suitability.
How many treatments are needed? If multiple treatments are required, how many weeks apart between the treatments is recommended?
This
will be very much dependent on the amount of reduction required, your
expectations and how your body will respond to the treatment. But
typically, we recommend at least 8 to 12 weeks between treatments for
optimal results.Can I have the treatment on the same day of the consultation?
This will be dependent on the booking
schedule of the Coolsculpting machines, as this treatment is very

After the procedure some patients experience redness, tingling, minor bruising or numbness in the treated areas, but this is temporary. No pain medication is required.
Q: WHO IS ELIGBLE FOR COOLSCULPTING? IS THERE A MINIMUM AGE?
A: CoolSculpting is not a weight loss solution and it is not substitute for invasive methods such as liposuction. The ideal Cool Sculpting candidate maintains a healthy weight yet struggles with bulges in common areas that do not lend themselves to easy removal through exercise or diet. They are seeking spot reduction for specific areas of fat, but are not considering a surgical procedure. But, after spending countless hours in the gym without
losing that dreaded “pooch,” Robinson is turning to different measures
to rid herself of those extra inches.
“I was hoping that this technique might help get those areas that just come along after getting older,” Robinson said.The procedure is called CoolSculpting—it’s a non-surgical device just approved by the FDA that works by freezing fat cells to the point where they break down. So, instead of burning fat off at the gym, you can freeze it off at the doctor’s office.
“It was like jumping into a cold ice bath,” Robinson said.
The whole process takes about an hour and begins with a gel patch put on the skin. A suction applicator is then put on to the fatty area, cooling it and then finally numbing it.
“It’s basically a non-surgical liposuction,” said Dr. Scott Gerrish, who is one of a handful of doctors in the area offering CoolSculpting.

He says it is an ideal option for men and women who are in relatively good shape but just cannot get rid of that muffin top, love-handles or pesky back fat. No suction hoses. No needles. No lasers, even. After your treatment, you get on with your busy day.”
Zeltiq—the manufacturer of CoolSculpting—says the majority of people see a 20-percent reduction in fat.
“Patients are incredibly happy that they can walk out, lose a bump or bulge, maybe an inch around their waist, and have no down time and go right back to working out,” Gerrish said.
Kat Mahan is one of those happy customers. She came to Dr. Gerrish about a year ago.
“I believe I started to see results in about two weeks, I felt it in my waist band in my pants,” Mahan said.
CoolSculpting does carry risks like bruising, pigment loss and frost bite. It also will not work for anyone who is overweight—it just works for those with concentrated pockets of fat.
But, for many, like Monique Robinson, the positives outweigh the negatives.
“I'm hoping that this just does the trick for me and I’ll be happy with the results,” Robinson said.
